Keep your phone system on the NBN network

As of spring 2019, over 5.2 million homes and businesses have now connected to a plan over Australia’s NBN network. This is up from 3.8 million in April of 2018.

With millions of businesses and individuals alike switching over to the national broadband network, it begs the questions…

Have all of those people kept their existing phone system? Did they have to upgrade to a new VoIP system?

It’s actually pretty easy to keep your phone system on the NBN network, and you don’t even need a new expensive VoIP system to make it all work.

Interested in finding out how to easily make the shift while keeping your current phone system? Keep on reading.

Can You Keep Your Phone System on the NBN Network?

Yes! It’s actually really easy, but also very common that you might have questions when doing so.

We get this question a lot, as a lot of telemarketing businesses in Australia are working hard to spread misleading information about the need to upgrade your existing phone system to a new VoIP system.

However, this just simply isn’t true, and this is what we here at My Business Voice can help you with.

The answer depends on the kind of technology you currently use at your home or business. Depending on your existing line and whether it’s an ISDN or PTSN, we’ll determine what kind of gateway you need.

A simple, inexpensive VoIP gateway can then act as a standard line and convert that data so that the system can transmit it to the NBN network.

Checking Your Current Phone System Technology

The first thing you’ll need to check is what kind of technology you are using with your current phone system. There are 3 different types:

  1.     PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network)
  2.     Basic Rate ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network)
  3.     Primary Rate ISDN

Differentiating between the three is important, as it will help you determine which gateway to purchase.

PSTN lines are analog and ISDN lines are digital. This means that if you’re using PSTN technology, your phone system uses physical wires to carry data. ISDN is a little bit higher quality, but it’s still not quite up to par with VoIP.

Not quite sure what VoIP is? It’s what the NBN works off of and sends data (such as voice or video) to various networks over the internet.

Think of what WhatsApp, Line, or Skype do when you make calls on your smartphone. That’s similar!

Once you know the type of technology you have, it’s time to figure out which existing telephone numbers you would like to keep. You might have to port your numbers, but we can help you with that.

To ensure that you keep your current phone number on the NBN and your current technology, it’s important to speak with a professional company who will help you make the switch.

They’ll need to install a gateway that connects the existing VoIP to a landline converter.

How Will My Phone Work on the NBN Network?

Again, the answer to this question depends on the kind of existing technology you have.

However, that really only makes a difference in the gateway we would install. Regardless, you’ll need a VoIP landline service to connect a landline phone to the router on the NBN.

It’s possible to use your old VoIP handset and even keep your old number when you switch to the NBN.

The difference now is that your NBN VoIP service sends and receives calls over the internet. The handset itself can still function the same.

Once you’re all set up on the NBN, you have a few choices. Depending on your personal needs or the needs of your business, you can stay connected in many unique ways.

For example, if your business wants to enjoy the benefits of using one company telephone number on the My Business Voice VoIP network, you can!

If the VoIP gateway connected to the phone system is an 8 port PSTN gateway, then you can make and receive a total of eight calls at once. This helps reduce communication costs and makes it easier to manage company contact numbers.

Answering Common Questions About Phone Systems on the NBN Network

Staying on the NBN or making the initial switch can be confusing to common consumers. It’s pretty technical, and we get that.

Here are some of the most common questions we receive regarding phone systems and the NBN network:

Q: Can you keep your phone system on the NBN network?

A: Yes, absolutely! Some telecommunications companies will try to sell you a new and expensive VoIP handset, though. While it might be time to upgrade, it’s not a necessity and there are other ways to make the switch without throwing out your old system.

Q: What is VoIP on the NBN?

A: VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol. A VoIP sends and receives calls over the internet instead of through wires. This is great, but it means that if the internet goes down in your area, your phone service can, too.

Q: Does the government requires that you get VoIP phone service?

A: No, not technically. However, for most Australians, you will be required to give up your current landline service. So, unless you’re connecting via Sky Muster Satellite or Fixed Wireless, then you’ll need to make the switch to a VoIP service.

Q: What is a VoIP handset?

A: It looks the same as a regular landline’s handset. It’s the actual phone that you pick up and speak through. It’s just the transmitter through which you enjoy broadband cordless communication.

Q: What kind of VoIP handset do I need?

A: Again, your existing handset will likely work on the VoIP network, depending on whether it’s a PSTN or ISDN. As long as it’s connected to a compatible adapter or modem router, you’ll be fine.
