Huawei P50 Pocket was a very expensive device that comes without 5G and Google Play services – which might prove to be a deal-breaker for some.

Having said that, let’s now take a closer look at the Pocket S with the following specs:

  • 6.9-inch foldable Full HD+ OLED screen with 1188 x 2790 pixels, 21:9 ratio or ~442 ppi density
  • 120Hz refresh rate
  • Cover display: 1.04-inch OLED screen with 340 x 340 pixels or 328 ppi
  • Fingerprint sensor (side-mounted)
  • Qualcomm SM7325 Snapdragon 778G 4G (6 nm) chipset, Octa-core (4x2.4 GHz Kryo 670 & 4x1.8 GHz Kryo 670) processor, Adreno 642L graphics and 8GB RAM
  • Dual primary camera: 40MP with f/1.8 aperture, (wide), PDAF, Laser AF + 13MP with f/2.2 aperture, 120˚ (ultrawide), AF, LED flash, HDR and panorama
  • 10.7 MP selfie camera with f/2.2 aperture, (ultrawide), HDR and panorama
  • 128GB/256GB/512GB internal storage with Nano Memory expansion slot up to 256GB maximum
  • Non-removable Li-Po 4000 mAh battery with Fast battery charging 40W (52% in just 40 minutes) and Reverse charging 5W
  • HarmonyOS 3.0 with no Google Play Services
  • Dual-sim and 4G LTE
  • November 11th 2022 estimated release date
  • 5,988 Chinese Yuan or ~820 USD for the 128GB internal storage variant, 6,488 Chinese Yuan or ~888 USD for the 256GB internal storage variant, and 7,488 Chinese Yuan or ~1,025 USD for the 512GB internal storage variant estimated price tag

A quick glance, and you can see how the Pocket S is sharing an almost similar DNA with the P50 Pocket – albeit a little lower-spec and slightly cheaper. But still, this foldable smartphone packs a large 6.9-inch Full HD+ OLED screen with 120Hz refresh rate that when folded, will display a 1.04-inch OLED secondary screen. Just nice to fit in your pocket or your small handbag, as well as to show important notifications.

Under the hood of the Pocket S is in the mid-range territory with the Snapdragon 778G 4G chipset, fast Kryo octa-core processor, good graphics and 8GB RAM. This combination should be fast enough for your daily apps and games.

Moving on to the camera department, the Pocket S is blessed with a dual 40MP+13MP primary camera which can take good shots. Then there’s the 10.7MP selfie camera for all your selfie needs.

Battery-wise, the Pocket S is supplied by the 4000 mAh battery which can last for a good day of usage. And when the time comes to plug it in, the fast battery charging feature can get it up to 52% in just 40 minutes, so you will be up and running in very little time.

A word of caution though, as the Pocket S will be featuring their own HarmonyOS 3.0 operating system which does not have Google Play Services. This means that you won’t be able to use your favourite Google apps like Gmail, YouTube, Google Drive, Google Docs and the rest. But I’m sure that Huawei has its own alternative apps up its sleeves.

Finally, there won’t be 5G connectivity which will be a huge turnoff for lots of people. What year are we living anyway?

Conclusion:

Huawei Pocket S tries to bring the foldable smartphone to the mainstream market by making it affordable. But still, there’s a lot to be desired, and the price is not that cheap for the masses. Coupled with the fact that there’s no Google Play Services and 5G connectivity, guess there are other better alternatives out there in the market.

Huawei Pocket S is expected to be released on November 11th, 2022, with an estimated price tag of 5,988 Chinese Yuan or ~820 USD for the 128GB internal storage variant, 6,488 Chinese Yuan or ~888 USD for the 256GB internal storage variant, and 7,488 Chinese Yuan or ~1,025 USD for the 512GB internal storage variant. There will be six colors to choose from, namely Blue, Pink, Gren, Silver, Gold and Black.
